rini's notes day 1

Feb 24 : Santa Cruz - Vallegrande

Normally it takes about 5 hours to drive 240 km from Santa Cruz (400 masl) to Vallegrande (2100 masl).

The day started so wet and grey as it had been raining like crazy since 2AM. The weather forecast was not so promising for the next 3-4 days. What a bummer! We were pretty occupied given the fact that most of our trip would be on unpaved (dirt) roads. Stuck in the mud is not a pretty sight.

During lunch time, the boys picked up the rented cars, two white Toyota Land Cruisers. Edu baptized the cars and gave their christened names; Papamóvil1 (PM1) and Papamóvil2 (PM2). We loaded each car with two boxes of snacks and two medium size cooler boxes for softdrink and water.

The sun finally appeared that
afternoon, shyly but enough to make our spirit high again.

We met up in the office parking lot with our stuff. Only Rini and Juan followed the universal One Bag rule, each with one backpack. The others brought... well let's say we had all kind of bags and luggages, all types, all colors, all fabrics, all sizes. You name it, we surely had.

At 17:30 with David, Hugo, Eva, Paola and Rini on board
PM1 left Santa Cruz.

Later that evening around 19:00 with Edu, Juan, Nino and Kathe on board
PM2 were also off to Vallegrande with one stop in Aeropuerto Viru Viru to pick up Javier who flew in from Argentina.

Due to the rain and road condition (curvy, holes, cracks), it was impossible to speed up. Several kilometers after Mataral, one of the front windshield wipers of PM1 flew away and then PM1 got his first flat tire incident. We changed the wheel and then in the nearest village, we got the tyre patched.

Around 1AM, PM1 checked in Hostal Juanita. An hour later, PM2 arrived. It was a very very long day, all were tired but in good spirit.
