rini's notes day 7
Eu had never failed to give us surprises. This time she baked us a CAKE for breakfast! This was my second trip, compared to the first one (2003), the food that Eu cooked was a luxury. At 9am, we were already in the mirador of Laguna Colorada (4280 masl) with the Punta Grande peak in the background. Some kind of red algae grows in this lake.
The borax content forms a white foams along the water bank. We spent a bit more time here. We walked from one end to the other end. The contrast between green bush, red water and the reflection of the peak in the water surface was a spectacular view.
Before leaving the park, we signed in the registration book in the national park office. We passed Siloli Desert and stopped at Arbol de Piedra. A bunch of giant rocks with strange form due to the wind abrasion were scattered in the middle of the desert. We climbed the rocks, enjoyed the panoramic view and took each other's photos.
The next three stops were Laguna Honda (flamencos and vicuñas), Laguna Charcota and Laguna Hedionda (the second one) where we had lunch; salad with shredded chicken and tasty shredded llama meat. At this point, we made a decision to not go through Salar de Uyuni from south. It was a rainy season and there was a big chance that the water could reach a dangerous level for vehicles. Since we had no luck with cars from the beginning of this trip, we didn't take the chance. We decided to go directly to Uyuni via normal road and the next day we would enter Salar de Uyuni from Uyuni (north) via Colchani. We would go as far as Isla de Pescadora.
We headed to Uyuni passing Volcan Ollague, Valle de Piedra (another weird looking rocks), some small villages (Villa Atoca, Culpina K and San Cristobal) and Train Cementery. Based on Idel's recommendation, we stayed the night in Hotel Los Girasoles. After two nights sleeping in a bunk inside a sleeping bag and dealing with filthy toilet, this hotel was heaven on earth. Hot water, comfy bed, warm blanket, spacious room and bathroom, super clean. We couldn't ask for more.
The owner of the hotel let us use the kitchen, so Eu was there preparing dinner meanwhile we took shower and ran some errands (buy the necessities, make phone calls, download photos, etc). At 9pm we met in the hotel dining room for another superb dinner. We ate vegetable soup and spaghetti bolognaise.
Photos of the seventh day can be viewed here.
